SELECTION OF NAVARATHNA STONES

The Nine precious Gems called Navaratnas consist of: Diamonds, Ruby, Emerald, Blue Sapphire, Yellow Sapphire, Cats Eye, Hessonite, Pearl, and Coral. These are made of essentially Carbon, Silica, Aluminum and Chromium with various other elements like beryllium and other trace elements. These are the elements that are abundant on Earth and are also found in the Human body in various proportions. Hindu Vedic Astrology suggests that by wearing a certain gem stone that is defined by one’s birth star, the wearer is protected and is connected to the governing Navagraha (Planet) or the deity under which the same gem is placed. Thus, people can choose a given stone based on their star and place them under any specific deity that is being consecrated and installed in a temple. By doing this and, if possible, by wearing this same gem, the devotee is said to establish a direct contact with the deity.

Who has modakas in his hand

And who destroys all things which are not good.

I bow before that great Lord permanently,
Who creates fear in the enemies of his devotees,
Who sparkles like the just risen Sun,
Who is saluted by Gods and Asuras
Who destroys obstacles of his devotees,
Who is the God of all devas,
Who is the God of all wealth,
Who is the God of all elephants,
And who is the leader of the army of Lord Shiva.

I bow to that Ganapati who shines like the Sun,
Who bestows peace to all the worlds,
Who removed the Gajamukhasura from this world,
Who has a very big paunch,
Who has an elephant-face which blesses,
And who is the one who shows kindness
Who is tolerant
Who is full of blessing,
And who showers great fame,
To those who salute Him.

I salute the very ancient elephant-god
Who destroys the wants of the have nots,
Who has been worshipped since ancient times,

Who is awesome at the time of final deluge,
Who wears serpents like Dananjaya as ornaments,
And who is fierce like the elephant in rut.

Who is ever lustrous tusk is very pretty,
Who is the son of Lord who killed the god of death,
Who has a form beyond ones imagination,
Who is endless,
Who tears asunder all obstacles,
And who dwells forever in the heart of Yogis ,
Like the season of spring.

This universe is the Eternal Being (Narayana), the imperishable, the supreme, the goal, multi-headed and multi-eyed (i.e., omnipresent and omniscient), the resplendent, the source of delight for the whole universe.

Viswataah paramam nityam viswam naaraayanam hariim
Viswaamevedam purushaastadvisvampajeevati

This universe is the Supreme Being (Purusha) alone; hence, it subsists on That, the Eternal which transcends it (in every way)—the Omnipresent Absolute which destroys all sins.

patim viswasyatmeswaram saswatam sivamachyutam
naaraayanam mahaajneyam viswaatmanam paraayanam

The protector of the universe, the Lord of all souls (or Lord over Self), the perpetual, the auspicious, the indestructible, the Goal of all creation, the Supreme object worthy of being known, the Soul of all beings, the Refuge unfailing (is He).

naaraayanaa param brahmaa tattwam naaraayanaah paraah
naaraayanaa paro jyotiratma naaraayanaa paraah
naaraayanaa paro dhyaatah dhyaanam naaraayanah paraah

The Lord Narayana is the Supreme Absolute; Narayana is the Supreme Reality; Narayana is the Supreme Light; Narayana is the Supreme Self; Narayana is the Supreme Meditator; Narayana is the Supreme Meditation.

yachca kinchit jagat sarvam drshyate srooyatepi va
antar bahisca tatsvaram vyapya naaraayanaah sthitah

Whatever all this universe is, seen or heard of—pervading all this, from inside and outside alike, stands supreme the Eternal Divine Being (Narayana).

anantamavyayam kavim samudrentam viswaa sambhuvam
padma kosaa praateeksam hrdayam capyadho mukham

He is the Limitless, Imperishable, Omniscient, residing in the ocean of the heart, the Cause of the happiness of the universe, the Supreme End of all striving, (manifesting Himself) in the ether of the heart which is comparable to an inverted bud of the lotus flower.

adho nishtya vitastyante nabhyaamupari tishtati
jwaalamalaa kulaam bhaati vishwasyayatanam mahat

Below the Adam’s apple, at a distance of a span, and above the navel (i.e., the heart which is the relative seat of the manifestation of Pure Consciousness in the human being), effulges the Great Abode of the universe, as if adorned with garlands of flames.

santaatam silaabhistu lambaatyaa kosaannibham
tasyante sushiram sookshman tasmin sarvam pratishtam

Surrounded on all sides by nerve-currents (or arteries), the lotus-bud of the heart is suspended in an inverted position. In it is a subtle space (a narrow aperture, the sushumna-nadi), and therein is to be found the Substratum of all things.

tasyaa madhye mahaanagnir vishwachir visvato mukha
sograabhugvibhajan tishthannahaaraa maajaraah kaavih

In that space within the heart resides the Great Flaming Fire, undecaying, all-knowing, with tongues spread out in all directions, with faces turned everywhere, consuming all food presented before it, and assimilating it into itself.

triyaa goordhwaa masdhassayee rasmayaatasyaa santataa
santapayati swam deha mapadatalaamaastaagah
tasyaa madhye vahnisikha aaneeyordhwaa vyaavasthithaah

His rays, spreading all round, sideways as well as above and below, warm up the whole body from head to foot. In the centre of That (Flame) abides the Tongue of Fire as the topmost among all subtle things.

neelaatoyaada madhyaasthad vidyullekhavaa bhaswaraa
neevaaraasooka vattanvee peeta bhaswatyanoopama

Brilliant like a streak of lightning set in the midst of the blue rain-bearing clouds, slender like the awn of a paddy grain, yellow (like gold) in colour, in subtlety comparable to the minute atom, (this Tongue of Fire) glows splendid.

tasyaa sikhayaa madhye paramaatmaa vyavasthithaah
saa brahmaa saa sivaah saa hariih sendraah soksharaah paramah swarat

In the middle of that Flame, the Supreme Self dwells. This (Self) is Brahma (the Creator), Siva (the Destroyer), Hari (the Protector), Indra (the Ruler), the Imperishable, the Absolute, the Autonomous Being.

ritam satyam param brahmaa purusham krishnaa pingalam
oordhwaaretam viroopaaksham viswaroopaayaa vai namo namah

Prostrations again and again to the Omni-formed Being, the Truth, the Law, the Supreme Absolute, the Purusha of blue-decked yellow hue, the Centralised-force Power, the All-seeing One.

naaraayanayaa vidhmahe
vasudevaayaa dheemahi
tanno vishnuh prachodayaat

We commune ourselves with Narayana, and meditate on Vaasudeva; May that Vishnu direct us (to the Great Goal).

The Purusha Suktam in praise of Lord Vishnu is one of the Pancha Sooktams of the Vedic tradition.

We worship and pray to the Supreme Lord for the welfare of all beings. May all miseries and shortcomings leave us forever so that we may always sing for the Lord during the holy fire ceremonies. May all medicinal herbs grow in potency so that all diseases may be cured. May the gods rain peace on us. May all the two-legged creatures be happy, and may all the four-legged creatures also be happy. May there be peace in the hearts of all beings in all realms.

Sabhoomim Visvatho Vruthvaa Athyathishta Dhasaangulam

A thousand heads has the Universal man, Purusha; as also a thousand eyes and a thousand feet He has. He spreads over the earth on all sides and beyond it as far as ten fingers can count. [Infinite numbers, without a beginning or end.

Purusha, the Man, is all that has been in the past,all that is coming and all that exists now. He is the ruler of immortality, as He comes out beyond everything and grows through food.

Paadhosya Visvaa Bhoothaani Thripaadhasyaa Mruthandhivi

What we see here is all the greatness of this Purusha, the Man, and is yet more than this. All creatures of this universe is only a quarter of Him and the other three quarters are what is remaining immortal in Heaven.

Thripdoorthva Udhaith Purushah: Paathos -e'haabhavaath Punah
Thatho Vishvang Vyakraamath Saasanaana Sane Abhi

This three fourths of Purusha arise beyond the universe. One fourth of him only arose again and again here on earth. Thence, as He spread in all directions,
appeared all those creations that eats food and that which eats not on this earth.

Thasmaadh viraadajaayatha Viraajo Adhipoorushah:
Sajaatho Athyarikshatha Pascaadhbhoomim -athopuraha

From him the brilliant Viraaj was born, from Viraj came the primal Purusha.
When he was born, he spread beyond the earth, on all the sides to create all beings.[Viraj is the Female principle, which with the primal Purusha produces the concrete universe. In the Atharvaveda She is an independent creative principle identified with Brahma, with speech and with Prajapathi.]

Yath purushena Havishaa Dhevaayakyamath anvatha
Vasanthoasya Aseethaajyam Greeshma Idhmas Saradhdhavihi

When the Devas (Celestial Angels) spread on the sacrificial offerings with Purusha as oblation, spring was its ghee [melted butter] summer the fuel, autumn the oblation.

Sapthaasyaasan Pari dhayah: Thrissabtha Samidhah Krithaah
Dhevaayath Yagnyamthan Vaanaah: Abhathnan Purusham Pasum

Seven Devas were the sticks that enclose the place of Yajña (Sacrificial Fire rituals), thrice seven [21] philosophical principles were made the fuel sticks;
the Devas performed the Yajña and they bound the Purusha as the cow at the Yajña.

Tham Yagnyam Bharhishi Prowkshan Purusham Jaathamagrathah
Thena Devaa Ayajantha Saadhyaa Rushayaschaye

As the sacrifice on the Yajña they besprinkled the Purusha, born in the beginning.
With him the Devas performed the Yajña along with Saadhyas (other Devas) and the Sages.

Thasmaath Yagnyaath Sarvahuthah: Sambrutham Brushadhaajyam
Pasoogusthaagus Chakre Vaayavyaan Aaranyan graamya -aschaye

From that sacrifice completely offered, formed the cream and ghee [melted butter].
He made it the beasts and birds of the air, of the forest and those of the villages.

From that sacrifice completely offered were born the verses (Rg Veda) and
the Saaman Melodies (Saamaveda). The Chhandhas metres were born from it. From it was born the Sacrificial formula (Yajurveda).

From this [Yajña] the horses were born and those that have one row and two rows of teeth. Cattle were born from it. From it were born goats and sheep.

When they created this Universal Purusha, into how many forms did they make him? What was the form of his mouth? What was his two arms? What are his thighs and feet called?

Uruthathasya Yadhvaisyah: Pathbyaagum Soodhro Ajaayatha

His mouth formed the Brahmin (teacher or Priest), his two arms were made the Rajaanya (Kshathriya or warrior), his two thighs the Vaisyaa (traders or Agriculturist) and from his feet the Soodhra (worker or servant) was born.

Muka -adinthrascha -agnischa Praanaath Vaayurajaayatha

His mind (manas) formed the moon, from his eye became the sun,
from his mouth came Indra and Agni, from his breath Vaayu (wind) was born.

Pathbhyaam Bhoomir Dhisasrothraath – Thathaa Loghagum Akalpayan

From his navel arose the open sky, from his head the heaven originated,
from his feet the earth was formed, the directions came from his ears.
Thus did they create all the worlds.

The Purusha, is the creator of all forms and is given all the names.
As we know his great qualities, He is all powerfull, beyond darkness, bright like the Sun performing all actions.

Dhaathaa Purasthaath Yamuthaajahaara – Sakrapravidhvaan Prathisaschathasrah
Thamevam Vidhvaanamrutha Iha Bhavathi – Naanyapanthaa Ayanaayavidhyathe

He who understands this Purusha, whom Brahma called Paramathma,
whom Indira saw in all four directions, attains Moksha [liberation] in this birth.

Yaggnena Yaguamayajantha dhevaah: – Thaani Dharmaani Prathamaanyasan
Thehanakam Mahimaanassajanthe – Yathra Poorve Saadhyassanthi Devaah

The Devas who worshipped this Purusha, by this Yajña and by all the Dharma,
attained high levels in Svarga. All persons performing this Yajña shall reach similar status.

This hymn revering Sri or Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity and fertility. The hymns are found in the Rig Vedic khilanis

Hiranyavarnaa harineem suvarna rajaathastrajam,

Aswa poorva radha madhyaam hasthi nadha prabhodhineem,
Sriyam devi upahvaye srirma deveem jupathaam

Ibeseech and request that Sridevi, Who is heralded by the voice of elephants, Who is piloted by horses, And who is surrounded by chariots,
To come near me and shower her grace, And request her to be within me.

Kaam sosmathim hiranya praakaram aardhra jwalantheem truptham tharpayantheem,
Padme sthithaam padma varnaam thaam ehopahvaye sriyam.

I request and pray that Sridevi, Who is happiness personified, Who is ever smiling, Who is in the golden fort, Who is full of mercy, Who is ever shining,
Who makes others happy, Who sits on the lotus, And who is of the colour of lotus, To be present here with me.

Chandraam prabhasam jwalanthim sriyam loke deva jushta mudhaaram,
Thaam padmineemeem saranamaham prapadhye lakshmeerme nasyatham twam vrune

I seek the protection of that Sridevi, Who makes the world happy like the moon, Who is richly lustrous, Who shines because of her fame, Who is full of mercy, Who is the meaning of the letter ”eem”, And who possesses treasures like Padmanidhi, And request Lakshmi to remove poverty from me.

Adhityavarne thamaso adhijaatho vanaspathisthva vrukshodha bilwa,
Tasya phalaani tapasa nudhanthu mayaantharayascha bahya alakshmi.

Hey Goddess who shines like sun, By your great penance, Was born the bilwa tree, Which is the king of forests, And let its fruits full of knowledge,
Remove ignorance inside, And bad things outside.

Upaithu maam deva sakhaa keertheeya maninaa saha,
Pradhur bhoothosmo rashtresmin keerthim vruddhim dadhathu me.

The god of wealth Kubhera, Who is the friend of Mahadeva, Should come in search of me, For I am born in this country, Showered with your grace,
Be pleased to give me fame and fulfillment.

Kshupthipaasa malaam jyeshtamalakshmim nasayamyaham,
Abhoothim masamrudheem cha sarva nirnudha me grahad.

I would remove Jyeshta, Who creates hunger and thirst, Wherever she lives,
By your grace, And please remove poverty and want from my house.

Gandhadwaaram dhuradapaa nithyapushtaam kareepineem,
Easwaree sarva bhoothaanam thaam ehopahvaye swayam.

I request and pray that Sridevi, Who pleases others by sweet scent, Who cannot be defeated, Who gives prosperity daily, Who is full of everything,
And who is the goddess of all beings, To come and be present here.

Maanasa kamamaakrutheem vachassathya maseemahi,
Pasoonaam roopamannasya mayi sree srayathaam yasa.

I request you goddess Sridevi, To forever bless me, With fulfillment of good desires of the mind, With ebbing happiness in life, With truth in my words,
And with beauty that plenty of food creates.

Kardhamena prajaa bhoothaa mayi sambhava kardhama,
Sriyam vaasaya me kule matharam padmamalineem.

Hey sage Kardhama , In your house was born, Goddess Sridevi as daughter,
And so be pleased to be with me, So that mother Lakshmi with lotus garland,
Is forever in my family, And bless us all with her grace.

Aapa srujanthu snigdhani Chikleetha vasa me gruhe,
Ni cha deveem matharam sriyam vasaya se kule.

Hey Sage Sikleedha, Who is the son of Sridevi, Let the goddess of water,
Produce fatty products like milk and ghee, And please come and live with us,
And request Goddess Sridevi, To live in our family forever.

Hey god of fire, Be pleased to bless me, So that Goddess Sridevi, Who is deeply merciful, Who holds the staff of the emperor, Who has a body like tender climbing plant, Who has a pretty colour, Who wears golden garland,
Who shines like sun god, And who is purity personified, To come and be with me.

Thaam ma avaha jathavedo Lakshmi managaamineem,
Yasyaam hiranyam prabhootham gaavo dasyoswaan vindheyam purushapaanaham .

Hey god of fire, Be pleased to bless me, So that Goddess Sridevi, By whose grace, I will get plenty of Gold, I will get lot of cows, I will get lot of maidservants, I will get lot of horses. And I will get lot of servants,
Never ever leave me.

Ya suchi prayatho bhoothwa juhu yaadajya mavaham
Sriya panchadasascha cha srikaama ssathatham japeth.

He who prays for the grace of Sridevi, Should be pure in mind and body,
Control his mind, And everyday chant the above, Fifteen rik mantras,
And do homa* with ghee.

Ananda, Kardamashaiva Chikleedha ithi vishrutha,
Rishayasthe thraya proktha swayam sreereva devatha.

For this Homa, Ananda, Kardhama and Chikleedha, Are the famous sages.
And Sridevi is the goddess.

Padmasane padmoru, padamakshi padamasambhave,
Twam maam bhajaswa padamakshi yena sowkhyam labhamyaham.

Hey Goddess who sits on Lotus, Hey Goddess who has thighs like lotus,
Hey Goddess who has eyes like lotus, And hey goddess who was born out of lotus, Please grant me all, That you think will give a good life.

Aswadhabhi cha godhayee dhanadayee maha dhane,
Dhanam me jupathaam devi sarva kaamartha siddhaye.

Hey Goddess who grants wealth of horses. Hey Goddess who grants wealth of cows, Hey Goddess who grants wealth, And hey Goddess who is the queen of wealth, Grant me more wealth. So that I can fulfill all my wants.

Puthra , pouthra , dhanam dhanysm hasthyaswajaavigoradham,
Prajaanaa bhavasi mathaa ayushmantham karothu maam.

Hey Goddess you are mother of all people, Please grant me sons, grandsons, wealth and grains, Please grant me elephants, horses, sheep, goat, cow and chariots, And also please grant me long life.

Chandramam lakshmeem eesaanaam sooryamaam sriyam easwareem,
Chandrasooryagni varna maam Sri Mahalakshmim upasmahe.

I pray and meditate on that Maha Lakshmi, Who shines like the cool moon,
Who is the inner strength of Iswara, Who shines like the hot sun, Who is Sridevi and Iswari, And who is of the form of crescents, Of moon, sun and fire.

Dhana magnir , dhanam vayur dhanam sooryor dhanam vasu,
Dhanam indro brahaspathir varuno dhanamasnuthe.

It is by your grace Sridevi, That Fire is wealthy, Air is wealthy, Sun is wealthy, Ashta Vasus are wealthy, Indra is wealthy, Brahaspathi is wealthy,
And Varuna is wealthy.

Vainatheya somam, pibha somam, pibhathu vruthraha,
Somam dhanasya somino mahyam dadathu somini.

Hey Garuda, drink Soma, Hey Indra drink Soma, Hey devas who have drunk Soma, Please grant me wealth, For I am performing Soma Yaga.

Na krodho na cha matsarya na lobho naa shubha mathi,
Bhavanthi krutha punyanam bakthaanam sri suktham japeth sada.

The devotees who do holy deeds, Never get angry, Are never jealous,
And never do bad deeds, And for the devotion to grow, They should chant often, The Sri Suktha.

Varshanth the vibhavari dhivo abhrasya vidhuyutha,
Rohanthu sarva bheejanyava brahmodweepo jahi.

Hey Goddess Sridevi, By your grace let it rain, From the black clouds with streaks of lightning, By your grace let all seeds germinate and grow, And kill all those who are against the path of gods.

Padmapriye, padmini, padmahasthe, padmalaye, padmadalaayathakshi.
Viswapriye Vishnu manonukoole twat pada padmam mayi sannidasthwa.

Hey Goddess Padmini, Who likes lotus flowers, Who holds lotus flower in her hand, Who lives in lotus flower, Who has broad eyes like the petal of lotus flower, Who is the darling of the entire world, Who is dearest to Lord Vishnu,
Please keep your holy feet on me.

Maha devyai cha vidmahe, Vishnu patnai cha dheemahi,
Thanno Lakshmi prachodayath.

Try we will to understand Mahadevi,
We would meditate on consort of Vishnu,
And let Goddess Lakshmi help us in this.

Ya sa padmasanastha Vipuls katithati padma pathrayathakshi,
Dambheera varthanabhi sthanabhara namitha shubravasreouttareeya,

Salutations to Goddess Lakshmi, Who is the daughter of king of ocean of milk, Who is the consort of Lord of Sri Ranga, Whose maids are the deva maidens, Who is the lighthouse for the entire world, Whose side long glances add fame, To Brahma, Shiva and Indra, Whose family is all those in three worlds, Who appears in lotus ponds, And who is the darling of Lord Mukunda.

I salute the Goddess of this universe, Who is having three eyes, Who shines like billions of rising suns, Who is seated on a lotus flower, And who holds in her hand, Boons, rope, weapon to tame and seal to protect.

Sarva mangala Mangalye,
Shive, Saravartha sadhake,
Saranye Trayambake,
Gowri narayani namosthuthe

Salutations to that Goddess, Who is the greatest good among all the good,
Who is forever peaceful, Who grants all boons, Who is the ultimate protection, Who has three eyes, Who is white in colour And who is Narayani.

This is a prayer to the fire God Agni occurring in the Maha Narayana
Upanishad.

Jatavedase sunavama soma marathee yatho nidhahadhi veda,
Sa na parshadathi durgani viswa naaveva sindhum durithathyagni. 1

Our oblations of Soma to the fire god,
May he, the all knowing one destroy all those who do not like us,
May that divine fire lead us out of all perils,
Like a captain takes his boat across the sea,
And also save us from all wrongs.

Thaam agni varnaam thapasa jwalanthim vairochanim karma phaleshu
jushtam,
Durgam devim saranamaham prapadhye, sutharasi tharase nama. 2

I take refuge in the divine mother Durga,
Who shines like a fire due to her penances,
Who resides in actions and their fruits and makes them effective,
And I salute her who helps us cross our difficulties.
It could be translated as Mother of difficulties also.

Agne thwam paaraya navyo asmaan swasthibhirathi durgani viswa,
Pushscha prithwi bahula na urvee bhava thokaaya thanayaya shamyoh. 3

Oh God of fire, you are worthy of praise,
For by novel methods you help us cross,
The difficulties and make us happy,
May our land in this earth become extensive,
May the land for growing crops become large,
And be pleased to join our children and,
Their children with joy and happiness.

Vishvaani no durghaa jathaveda sindhunaa nava durithathi parshi,
Agne athrivan manasaa grina no asmakam bodhayithwa thanoo naam. 4

Oh Jatha Vedas who is the destroyer of all sins,
Make us cross all our troubles like a boat,
Which takes us to the other shore without problems,
Oh Fire, protect us like the sage Athri, who would take care of us,
Mindful of our safety and our happiness.

Prithana jitham saha mana mugram agnim huvema paramath sadhasthath,
Sa na parshadathi durgani viswa kshamaddhevo athi durithatyagni. 5

We invoke the fierce Fire God who is the leader of us all.
And who is the killer of all our enemies from the highest place,
To take us across all difficulties and all that is perishable and protect us.

Prathnoshika meedyo adhvareshu sanacha hota navyascha sadhsi,
Swacha agne piprayaswa asmabhyam cha soubhahya maya jaswa. 6

Oh Fire God, you are praised during sacrifices,
And always increase our happiness, and exist as sacrifices,
Which are olden and those which are new,
Please make us, who are only yourself, happy,
And grant us good fortune from all our sides.

Gobhir jushta mayujo nishithktham thavendra vishnor anusancharema,
Naa kasya prushtam abhisamvasaano vaishnavim loka iha madhayantham. 7

Oh Lord, you are not connected with sin and sorrow,
Permit us to always serve you who pervades all wealth,
May the Gods who live in the highest region make me,
Who adores Vishnu, delighted and happy and grant my wishes.

പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിലെ പതിനെട്ടു മലനിരകളുടെ മധ്യത്തിലായി ശബരിമല സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. അവിടെയാണ് ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ തീര്‍ത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നായ ധര്‍മ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു ചുറ്റുമുള്ള 18 മലകളിലെ 18 മലദൈവങ്ങള്‍ക്കു നടുവിലാണ് ശ്രീ അയ്യപ്പന്‍റെ ക്ഷേത്രം.

ഐതിഹ്യം

പണ്ട് പാലാഴിമഥന സമയത്ത് പാലാഴി കടഞ്ഞെടുത്ത അമൃത്‌ അസുരന്‍മാര്‍ സൂത്രത്തില്‍ കൈക്കലാക്കി. അത് തിരിച്ചെടുക്കാനായി വിഷ്ണു മോഹിനീ രൂപം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. ഈ രൂപത്തില്‍ ആകൃഷ്ട്ടനായ ശിവഭഗവാന് മോഹിനിയില്‍ ജനിച്ചതാണ് അയ്യപ്പനെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. മഹിഷി വധമായിരുന്നു അയ്യപ്പന്‍റെ അവതാര ഉദ്ദേശം.

കുട്ടികളില്ലാതെ വിഷമിച്ചിരുന്ന പന്തളം രാജാവ് നായാട്ടിനായി വനത്തിലെത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ പമ്പാതീരത്ത് വച്ച് കഴുത്തില്‍ മണി കെട്ടിയ സുന്ദരനായ ഒരാണ്‍കുഞ്ഞിനെ കണ്ടുമക്കളില്ലാതെ വിഷമിക്കുകയായിരുന്ന രാജാവ് ആ കുട്ടിയെ കൊട്ടാരത്തില്‍ കൊണ്ടുപോയി . കഴുത്തില്‍ സ്വര്‍ണ്ണമണിമാല ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് “മണികണ്ഠന്‍“ എന്നു പേരും നല്കി.

ആയോധനകലയിലും വിദ്യയിലും നിപുണനായ അയ്യപ്പനെ യുവരാജാവായി വാഴിക്കാനായിരുന്ന പന്തളം രാജാവിന്റെ ആഗ്രഹം. എന്നാല്‍ കുറച്ചു കാലങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം രാജാവിന്‌ സ്വന്തം കുഞ്ഞു പിറക്കുകയും. ആ കുഞ്ഞിനെ രാജാവാക്കുവാന്‍ രാജ്ഞിയും മന്ത്രിയും ചേര്‍ന്ന് തന്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്തു.ഇതിനായി മന്ത്രി രാജ്ഞിയെ വശത്താകുകയും, അവരുടെ ഗൂഡപദ്ധതി പ്രകാരം രാജ്ഞിക്ക് വയറുവേദന വരുകയും കൊട്ടാരവൈദ്ധ്യന്‍ പുലിപ്പാല്‍ മരുന്നായി നിശ്ചയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ഗൂഡപദ്ധതിയനുസരിച്ച് പുലിപ്പാല്‍ കാട്ടില്‍ നിന്നും കൊണ്ടുവരാന്‍ നിയുക്തനായത് മണികണ്ഠനാണ്. അങ്ങനെയാണ് പുലിപ്പാലിനായി അയ്യപ്പനെ കൊടുംകാട്ടിലേക്ക് രാജ്ഞി പറഞ്ഞയക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ മഹിഷിയെയും വധിച്ച് പുലികളുമായി അയ്യപ്പന്‍ വിജയശ്രീലാളിതനായി മടങ്ങിയെത്തി. പുലിയുടെ പുറത്തിരുന്നു വരുന്ന അയ്യപ്പനെ കണ്ടു നാട്ടുകാരെല്ലാം ഭയക്കുകയും ഓടിയോളിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
അയ്യപ്പന്‍ ദൈവമാണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ പന്തളം രാജാവ് അയ്യപ്പന്റെ നിര്‍ദേശപ്രകാരം ശബരിമലയില്‍ ക്ഷേത്രം നിര്‍മിക്കുകയും . അവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. പുലിപ്പാല്‍ കൊണ്ടുവരാന്‍ കാട്ടിലേക്ക് പോകുമ്പോള്‍ തയ്യാറാക്കിയതാണ് “ഇരുമുടിക്കെട്ട്” എന്നൊരു വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. അയ്യപ്പനോട് മന്ത്രി ചെയ്ത പാപത്തില്‍ നിന്നും മുക്തി നേടാനാണ് 41 ദിവസത്തെ വ്രതവും വര്‍ഷംതോറുമുള്ള തീര്‍ത്ഥയാത്രയും എന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം.

അയ്യപ്പനും വാവരും

വാവരുമായി യുദ്ധമുണ്ടായെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് ഇവര്‍ ഉറ്റ ചങ്ങാതിമാരായി. വാവരുടെയും കടുത്തയുടെയും സഹായത്തോടെ അയ്യപ്പന്‍ പന്തളം രാജ്യത്തെ ശത്രുക്കളില്‍ നിന്നും രക്ഷിച്ചു. അയ്യപ്പന്റെ ഉറ്റമിത്രമായി ഐതിഹ്യത്തില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന വാവരുടെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ ദര്‍ശനം നടത്തിയ ശേഷം മാത്രമേ അയ്യപ്പഭക്തന്മാര്‍ പതിനെട്ടാം പടി ചവിട്ടാവൂ എന്നൊരു വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. മതസൗഹാര്‍ദ്ദത്തിന്റെ ഉത്തമ ഉദാഹരണമായി വാവരുടെ പള്ളിയും അയ്യപ്പന്റെയും ക്ഷേത്രവും ശബരിമലയില്‍ നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു

ശബരിമല ശ്രീധര്‍മ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഉത്സവമാണ് മകര വിളക്ക്. മകരമാസം തുടങ്ങുന്ന മകരം ഒന്നാം തീയ്യതിയാണ് ഈഉത്സവം നടക്കുന്നത്. അന്നേദിവസം ശ്രീധര്‍മ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ വളരെ വലിയ ഉത്സവവും വിശേഷാല്‍ പൂജകളും നടക്കുന്നു. ശബരിമലയുടെ മൂലസ്ഥനം പൊന്നമ്പലമേട്ടിലായിരുന്നു എന്നൊരു വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. ശബരിമലയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 10-16 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ദൂരമുള്ള പൊന്നമ്പലമേട്ടില്‍ പരശുരാമന്‍ സ്ഥാപിച്ച മറ്റൊരു ശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെന്നും അവിടെയുള്ള ജ്യോതിമണ്ഡപത്തില്‍ വനദേവതമാര്‍ മകരസംക്രമദിവസം ദീപാരാധന നടത്തിയിരുന്നതാണ് മകരജ്യോതിയായി കണ്ടിരുന്നതെന്നും വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. ഇവിടത്തെ മലവേടന്മാരുടെ ആഘോഷവേളയില്‍ കത്തിച്ചിരുന്ന കര്‍പൂരമാണ് മകരജ്യോതി എന്നു പറയുന്നവരും ഉണ്ട്.

തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ മഹാരാജാവ്‌ ശ്രീ ചിത്തിരതിരുനാള്‍ 1973ല്‍ അയ്യപ്പന്‌ സമര്‍പ്പിച്ച 420 പവന്‍ തൂക്കമുള്ള തങ്കയങ്കി മണ്‌ഡലപൂജയ്‌ക്കാണ്‌ ശബരിമലമുകളിലെ അയ്യപ്പവിഗ്രഹത്തില്‍ ചാര്‍ത്തുന്നത്‌. മണ്‌ഡലപൂജയ്‌ക്ക്‌ രണ്ടുനാള്‍ മുമ്പാണ്‌ അനുഷ്‌ഠാനത്തിന്‍െറ പുണ്യവുമായി തങ്കയങ്കി രഥയാത്ര ആറന്മുള നിന്നു
പുറപ്പെടുന്നത്‌.

ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു ചുറ്റുമുള്ള 18 മലകളിലേ 18 മലദൈവങ്ങള്‍ക്കു നടുവിലാണ് അയ്യപ്പന്‍ എന്നൊരു വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. ഇതിന്‍റെ പ്രതീകമാണ് 18 പടികള്‍. ഈ മലദൈവങ്ങളെ പ്രീതിപ്പെടുത്താനാണ് “പടിപൂജ“ അഥവാ “ഗിരിദേവതാപൂജ“ നടത്തിവരുന്നതു എന്നൊരു ഐതിഹ്യമുണ്ട്. അയ്യപ്പന്‍റെ പൂങ്കാവനം ഈ 18 മലകളാണെന്നും 18 മലകള്‍ 18 പുരാണങ്ങളാണെന്നും അഭിപ്രായമുണ്ട്.

18 മലകള്‍ ഇവയാണ് ശബരിമല, പൊന്നമ്പലമേട്, ഗൌണ്ഡല്‍മല, നാഗമല, സുന്ദരമല, ചിറ്റമ്പലമേട്, ഖല്‍ഗിമല, മാതാംഗമല, മൈലാടും മേട്, ശ്രീപാദമല, ദേവര്‍മല, നിലയ്ക്കല്‍മല, തലപ്പാറമല, നീലിമല, കരിമല, പുതശ്ശേരിമല, കാളകെട്ടിമല, ഇഞ്ചിപ്പാറമല.

ശബരിമലക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠാമൂര്‍ത്തി ശാസ്താവാണ്. കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദര്‍ശനമായി മരുവുന്നു. തൊട്ടടുത്താണ് മാളികപ്പുറത്തമ്മക്ഷേത്രം. മാളികപ്പുറത്തമ്മയെ ഉപദേവതയായി കരുതുന്നു. രണ്ടുനിലയിലുള്ള മാളികയുടെ പുറത്താണ് ദേവി വിരാജിക്കുന്നത്. മറ്റൊരു ഉപപ്രതിഷ്ഠ കന്നിമൂല ഗണപതിയാണ്. കൂടാതെ വാവരുസ്വാമിയുടെയും കടുത്തസ്വാമിയുടെയും സാന്നിദ്ധ്യവും അവിടെ ഉണ്ട്.

ശബരിമലയില്‍ പോകുന്നെങ്കില്‍ അത് എരുമേലി വഴിയായിരിക്കണം എന്ന് പഴമക്കാര്‍ പറയും. എരുമേലിയില്‍ നിന്നും കോട്ടപ്പടി, പേരൂര്‍തോട്, അഴുത, കരിമല, ചെറിയാനവട്ടം, നീലിമല, ശരംകുത്തിയാല്‍ വഴി ശബരിമലയിലെത്താം.

എരുമേലിയില്‍ നിന്നും റാന്നിയിലേക്കും അവിടെ നിന്നും പ്ലാപ്പള്ളിയിലേക്കും പ്ലാപ്പള്ളിയില്‍ നിന്നും പമ്പയിലേക്കും വഴിയുണ്ട്. എരുമേലിയില്‍ നിന്നും മുക്കൂട്ടുതറ വഴിയും പമ്പയിലെത്താം.

തീര്‍ത്ഥാടകര്‍ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ വരുന്നത് വടശ്ശേരിക്കര, പ്ലാപ്പള്ളി, നിലയ്ക്കല്‍, ചാലക്കയം വഴിയാണ്. മണ്ണാറക്കുളത്തിയില്‍ നിന്നും ചാലക്കയത്തിലേക്കുള്ള റോഡിലൂടെയുള്ള യാത്ര വളരെ സുഗമമായിരിക്കും.

പമ്പയില്‍ നിന്നും നീലിമല ശബരിപീഠം വഴിയും സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യന്‍ റോഡ് ചന്ദ്രാംഗദന്‍ റോഡ് വഴിയും സന്നിധാനത്തെത്താം. വണ്ടിപ്പെരിയാറില്‍ നിന്നും മൗണ്ട് എസ്റേറ്റ് വഴി ഒരു റോഡ് സന്നിധാനത്തിലേക്കുണ്ട്. പമ്പയുടെ ഏറ്റവും അടുത്തുള്ള റെയില്‍വെ സ്റേഷന്‍ ചെങ്ങന്നൂരാണ്. ഇവിടെ നിന്നും പമ്പ വരെ 89 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ദൂരമുണ്ട്. കോട്ടയം റെയില്‍വെ സ്റേഷനില്‍ നിന്നും 123 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ സഞ്ചരിച്ചാല്‍ പമ്പയിലെത്താം. തീര്‍ത്ഥാടനകാലത്ത് പ്രത്യേക ട്രെയിനുകള്‍ ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്താറുണ്ട്.

എരുമേലിയില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ പമ്പയിലേക്കുള്ള ഉദ്ദേശം 51 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ദൈര്‍ഘ്യം വരുന്ന പരമ്പരാഗതമായ കാനനപാത വളരെ പ്രാധാന്യമര്‍ഹിക്കുന്നതാണ്‌. ഒട്ടേറെ പുണ്യസ്ഥലങ്ങള്‍ താണ്ടി കാനനത്തിലൂടെ കാല്‍നടയായുള്ള ഈ യാത്ര ഭക്തര്‍ക്ക്‌ ആത്മനിര്‍വൃതിയേകുന്ന ഒന്നാണ്‌. പേരൂര്‍ തോട്‌, ഇരുമ്പൂന്നിക്കര, അരശുമുടിക്കോട്ട, കാളകെട്ടി, അഴുതാനദി, കല്ലിടാംകുന്ന്‌, ഇഞ്ചിപ്പാറക്കോട്ട, മുക്കുഴി, കരിയിലാം തോട്‌, കരിമല, വലിയാനവട്ടം, ചെറിയാനവട്ടം എന്നിവയാണ്‌ എരുമേലിയ്‌ക്കും പമ്പയ്‌ക്കും ഇടയ്‌ക്കുള്ള പുണ്യസങ്കേതങ്ങള്‍. എരുമേലിയില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ കാളകെട്ടി വരെ 11 കിലോമീറ്ററും കാളകെട്ടിയില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ അഴുതയിലേയ്‌ക്ക്‌ രണ്ടര കിലോമീറ്ററും അഴുതയില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ പമ്പവരെ 37 കിലോമീറ്ററുമാണ്‌ ദൂരം. പേരൂര്‍ തോടില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ ഇരുമ്പൂന്നിക്കരയിലേയ്‌ക്ക്‌ മൂന്നു കിലോമീറ്ററുണ്ട്‌. ഇരുമ്പൂന്നിക്കരയില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ കാനനം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു. ഇരുമ്പൂന്നിക്കരയില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ അരശുമുടിക്കോട്ടയിലേക്കും മൂന്ന്‌ കിലോമീറ്ററാണ്‌ ദൂരം. അവിടെ നിന്ന്‌ കാളകെട്ടിയ്‌ക്ക്‌ 5 കിലോമീറ്ററും. അയ്യപ്പഭക്തന്മാര്‍ ആദ്യമെത്തുന്ന പുണ്യസങ്കേതമാണ്‌ എരുമേലി. പന്തളരാജാവായിരുന്ന രാജശേഖരപാണ്ഡ്യന്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച ഒരു ശാസ്‌താക്ഷേത്രം ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്‌. ശാസ്‌താക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ നിന്നും അധികം അകലെയല്ലാതെ അയ്യപ്പന്റെ വിശ്വസ്‌ത അനുയായിയും മുസ്ലീം യോദ്ധാവുമായിരുന്ന വാവരുടെ പള്ളി കാണാം. എരുമേലിയില്‍ നിന്നും കാല്‍നടയായി പുറപ്പെട്ട്‌ പുണ്യസങ്കേതമായ പേരൂര്‍ തോട്ടിലെത്തുന്ന തീര്‍ത്ഥാടകര്‍ അവിടെ വിശ്രമിച്ചശേഷം യാത്ര തുടരുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്ന്‌ ഇരുമ്പൂന്നിക്കരയും അരശുമുടിയും താണ്ടി ഭക്തര്‍ കാളകെട്ടിയിലെത്തുന്നു. മണികണ്‌ഠന്റെ മഹിഷീനിഗ്രഹത്തിന്‌ സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിക്കാനെത്തിയ ശ്രീപരമേശ്വരന്‍ തന്റെ കാളയെ കെട്ടിയിട്ട സ്ഥലമാണത്രേ കാളകെട്ടി. കാളകെട്ടിയിലെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ ദര്‍ശനം നടത്തിയശേഷം ഭക്തര്‍ പ്രകൃതിസുന്ദരമായ അഴുതാനദിക്കരയിലെത്തി വിശ്രമിക്കുന്നു. അടുത്തദിനം രാവിലെ അഴുതാനദിയില്‍ മുങ്ങിക്കുളിച്ച്‌ ഒരു ചെറിയ കല്ലുമെടുത്ത്‌ യാത്ര തുടരുന്ന അയ്യപ്പഭക്തര്‍ കാനനപാത താണ്ടി കല്ലിടാംകുന്നിലെത്തുന്നു. മണികണ്‌ഠന്‍ മഹിഷിയുടെ ഭൗതികദേഹം കല്ലും മണ്ണും വാരിയിട്ട്‌ സംസ്‌ക്കരിച്ചതിന്റെ ഓര്‍മ്മയ്‌ക്ക്‌ അഴുതയില്‍ നിന്നെടുത്ത കല്ല്‌ ഭക്തര്‍ ഇവിടെ ഇടുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്ന്‌ കാട്ടുവഴിയിലൂടെ നടന്ന്‌ മുക്കുഴിയിലെത്തി വിശ്രമിക്കുന്നു. പിറ്റേദിവസം രാവിലെ കരിയിലാംതോടും കടന്ന്‌ കരിമലയുടെ അടിവാരത്തെത്തുന്നു. മണ്ണിന്‌ കറുപ്പുനിറമായതുകൊണ്ടാണ്‌ ഈ മലയ്‌ക്ക്‌ കരിമല എന്ന്‌ പേരുവന്നതത്രേ. തുടര്‍ന്ന്‌ ഭക്തര്‍ ശരണംവിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്‌ കഠിനമായ കരിമല കയറ്റം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു. കരിമലമുകളില്‍ കരിമലനാഥനെ വണങ്ങി യാത്രതുടരുന്ന അയ്യപ്പന്മാര്‍ ചെറിയാനവട്ടം, പെരിയാനവട്ടം എന്നീ സ്ഥലങ്ങള്‍ പിന്നിട്ട്‌ പുണ്യനദിയായ പമ്പയുടെ തീരത്ത്‌ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു

     ധനം നേടാന്‍ നിങ്ങളുടെ പ്രയത്നത്തോടൊപ്പം ഈ ഋഗ്വേദ മന്ത്രത്തെ

സാധാരണയായി മഹാഗണപതിയെ വിഘ്നങ്ങളകറ്റുന്നവനായാണ് കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്.പൊതുവേ ഏതുകാര്യം തുടങ്ങുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പും ഗണേശ സ്മൃതി നല്ലതാണേന്നാണ് വിശ്വസിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. ബുദ്ധിയുടെയും സിദ്ധിയുടേയും ഇരിപ്പിടമായാണ് മഹാ ഗണപതിയെ കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്.

മനുഷ്യ ശരീരവും ആനയുടെ തലയും നാലു കയ്യുകളുമുള്ളതായാണ് ഗണപതിയെ വര്‍ണ്ണിച്ചിരിയ്ക്കുന്നത് ഒരു കൊമ്പ് ഒടിഞ്ഞതായി പറഞ്ഞിരിയ്ക്കുന്നു. രണ്ടു കൈകളില്‍ താമരയും മറ്റു രണ്ട് കൈകള്‍ അഭയമുദ്രയിലും വരദമുദ്രയിലും പിടിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
പരമശിവന്റേയും പാര്‍വതിദേവിയുടേയും ആദ്യപുത്രനാണ് ഗണപതി. ശിവ ശക്തി സംഗമത്തിലൂടെ ആദ്യം പ്രണവവും പിന്നീട് തേജോരൂപിയായ സ്കന്ദനുമുണ്ടായെന്നാണ് കല്‍പ്പന. എലിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വാഹനം. ഗണേശന്‍, വിനായകന്‍, ബാലാജി,വിഘ്നേശ്വരന്‍ എന്നീ പേരുകളിലും ഗണപതി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ശുഭകാര്യങ്ങളുടെ ഈശ്വരനായാണു ഗണപതി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.

* നാലു കയ്യുകള്‍ സൂക്ഷ്മ ശരീരത്തിന്റെ നാല് ഘടകങ്ങളാണ് മനസ്സ്, ബുദ്ധി, അഹംകാരം, ചിത്തം എന്നിവയാണവ.
* കയ്യിലുള്ള മഴു ലൗകിക ജീവിതത്തില്‍ നിന്നും ആശകളില്‍ നിന്നുമുള്ള വിടുതലിനായുള്ള ആയുധമാണ്. മനസ്സിന്റെ തലത്തിലാണ് ആശകള്‍ ഉടലെടുക്കുക.
* ചാട്ട ബുദ്ധിയുടെ ആയുധമാണ്. ശക്തിയായ വീശലില്‍ അത് വിഘ്നങ്ങളെ ഇല്ലാതെയാക്കി ബുദ്ധിയുടെ നേരായ ഒഴുക്കിനെ സഹായിയ്ക്കുന്നു.
* സാധകന് അഭയം നല്‍കുന്നതാണ് മൂന്നാമത്തെ കയ്യ്..അത് സാധകനു നേരെ അനുഗ്രഹം ചൊരിയുന്നു.
* പദ്മം ധ്യാനത്തിലെ ഒരു ഉയര്‍ന്ന അവസ്ഥയാണ്. മനുഷ്യന്റെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയര്‍ന്ന അവസ്ഥയായി സനാതന ദര്‍ശനം കണക്കാക്കുന്ന, അങ്ങേയറ്റത്തെ സമാധി അവസ്ഥയെ സൂചിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്നതാണത്

ശിവനും പാര്‍വതിക്കും കാവല്‍ നിന്ന ഗണപതി ശിവനെ കാണാന്‍‌വന്ന പരശുരാമനെ തടഞ്ഞുനിര്‍ത്തിയെന്നും ഇതില്‍ ക്രുദ്ധനായ പരശുരാമന്‍ തന്റെ മഴുവെടുത്ത് ഗണപതിയുടെ ഒരു കൊമ്പ് അരിഞ്ഞുകളഞ്ഞുവെന്നും ഒരു കഥ പറയുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ആദി പരാശക്തിയായ ദേവി ഒരു കളിമണ്‍ പ്രതിമയുണ്ടാക്കി അതിനു ദിവ്യശക്തികൊണ്ടു ജീവന്‍ കൊടുത്തു. അവന്‍ ദേവിയുടെ സ്വന്തം ശരീരത്തിന്റെ പകര്‍പ്പു തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. ഈ പുത്രന്‍ അവന്റെ അമ്മയുടെ കാവല്‍ ഭടനായി ആജ്ഞകള്‍ അക്ഷരം പ്രതി അനുസരിച്ചു പോന്നു. ഒരിയ്കല്‍ കുളിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തിനു കാവലായി ബാലാജി നിര്‍ത്തി പാര്‍വതി ദേവി നീരാട്ടിനു പോയി. ഈ സമയത്തു ശിവന്‍ നന്ദിയെയും മറ്റു ഭൂതഗണങ്ങളെയും വിട്ടു പര്‍വതിയെ വിളിപ്പിയ്ക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചു . ബാലാജി പക്ഷെ ആരെയും അനുവദിച്ചില്ല.ശിവന്‍ നേരിട്ടു വന്നെങ്കിലും ശിവനെയും ബാലനായ ഗണപതി കടത്തിവിട്ടില്ല. ഇതില്‍ ക്രുദ്ധനായ ശിവന്‍ ബാലാജിയുമായി ഘോരമായ യുദ്ധം ചെയ്യുകയും അവസാനം അവന്റെ തലവെട്ടിക്കളയുകയും ചെയ്തു. പാര്‍വതി കുളികഴിഞ്ഞു വരുമ്പോഴാണു സംഗതികള്‍ ശിവനു മനസ്സിലാവുന്നതു തന്നെ. യുദ്ധ ശേഷം ശിവനും തളര്‍ന്നു പോയിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ആദിപരാശക്തിയായ ദേവിയുടെ പുത്രദു:ഖത്താലുള്ള കോപഗ്നി ഇതിനുള്ളില്‍ ജ്വലിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. ബ്രഹ്മാവും വിഷ്ണുവും മറ്റു ദേവകളും ചേര്‍ന്ന് ശിവന്റെ അഭിപ്രായപ്രകാരം തെക്കോട്ട്‌ നടക്കുകയും ആദ്യം കാണുന്ന ജീവിയുടെ തല വെട്ടി തലയില്ലാത്ത ബാലാജിയില്‍ ഉറപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു എന്ന്‍‌ ഒരു ഐതിഹ്യ കഥ.

ശുഭ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുമ്പ് ഗണപതിഹോമം നടത്തുക ഹൈന്ദവര്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ പതിവാണ്. വിഘ്ന നിവാരണം, ഗൃഹപ്രവേശം, കച്ചവട ആരംഭം, ദോഷ പരിഹാരം എന്നിവക്കെല്ലാം ഗണപതിഹോമം മുഖ്യ ഇനമായി നടത്തി വരുന്നു. ഉദ്ദിഷ്ടകാര്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കായി പ്രത്യേക തരത്തിലും ഗണപതി ഹോമം നടത്താം.

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, also called the Tryambakam Mantra, is a verse of the Yajurveda addressed to Tryambakam “the three-eyed”, identified with the Hindu deity Shiva.

It’s literal translation is the Great Death-Conquering mantra. It is also called the Rudra mantra, referring to the furious aspect of Shiva; the Tryambakam mantra, alluding to Shiva’s three eyes; and its is sometimes known as the Mrita-Sanjivini mantra because it is a component of the “life-restoring” practice given to the primordial sage Shukra after he had completed an exhausting period of austerity.

The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is hailed by the sages as the heart of the Veda. Along with the Gayatri mantra it holds the highest place among the many mantras used for
contemplation and meditation.

Anybody can recite this mantra and attain good health, release from bondage and other problems. This is the greatest relieverfrom all evils and can be recited at any time like any other Maha-mantra. It should be recited preferably for forty days both in the morning and evening, after lighting a jyoti and sitting on a woollen asana while facing east.

Recite the Maha-mantra 108 times (one rosary) or its multiples in each sitting. This is the greatest work of Maharishi Vashistha. Before commencing the Mahamritunjaya mantra recite the following small prayer to the everlasting spirit of the Maharishi for his blessings and guidance.

We pray to Brihaspati (the Lord of this Universe and the teacher of this Vedic Knowledge), whose wishes are inviolable, for good thoughts (that will lead to good speech and actions that cannot be violated as it will be the truth).

VYAM VASHISHTHAYA NAMAH (21 Times)

This is the prayer to Maharishi Vashistha (whose Holy Spirit is Omnipresent).The initiated should practice the Pranayama ten times with the Beejakshara Mantra “OM HOUM JUM SAH”. Others can skip this and go to the Maha-mantra directly.This is to be followed by the Dhyana Mantra (Meditation) of Sri Tryambakeswara (One of the twelve Jyotirlinga) and then meditate on Sri Tryambakeshwara (Lord Shiva) and Sri Amriteshwari (Gouri or Parvati Shakti) with the relevant beejakshara and Rudra Pooja. Meditate for at least 15 Minutes before starting the Japa (Recitation of Mantra).Then repeat the following Mahamritunjaya mantra 108 times or multiples of this number.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS MAHAMANTRA

It is important to understand the meaning of the words as this makes the repetition meaningful and brings forth the results.

OM is not spelt out in the Rig-Veda, but has to be added to the beginning of all Mantras as given in an earlier Mantra of the Rig-Veda addressed to Ganapati.

TRYAMBAKKAM: refers to the Three eyes of Lord Shiva. ‘Trya’ means ‘Three’ and Ambakam’ means eyes. These three eyes or sources of enlightenment are the Trimurti or three primary deities, namely Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and the three ‘AMBA’ (also meaning Mother or Shakti’ are Saraswati, Lakshmi and Gouri. Thus in this word, we are referring to God as Omniscient (Brahma), Omnipresent (Vishnu) and Omnipotent (Shiva). This is the wisdom of Brihaspati and is referred to as Sri Duttatreya having three heads of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

YAJAMAHE: means, “We sing Thy praise”.

SUGANDHIM: refers to His fragrance (of knowledge, presence and strength i.e. three aspects) as being the best and always spreading around. Fragrance refers to the joy that we get on knowing, seeing or feeling His virtuous deeds.

PUSTIVARDHANAM: Pooshan refers to Him as the sustainer of this world and in this manner, He is the Father (Pater) of all. Pooshan is also the inner impeller of all knowledge and is thus Savitur or the Sun and also symbolises Brahma the Omniscient

Creator. In this manner He is also the Father (Genitor) of all.

URVAAROKAMEVA: ‘URVA’ means “VISHAL” or big and powerful . ‘AAROOKAM’ means ‘Disease’. Thus URVAROOKA means deadly and overpowering diseases. The diseases are also of three kinds caused by the influence (in the negative) of the three Guna’s and are ignorance (Avidya etc),falsehood (Asat etc as even though Vishnu is everywhere, we fail to perceive Him and are guided by our sight and other senses) and weaknesses (Shadripu etc. a constraint of this physical body and Shiva is all powerful).

BANDANAAM: means bound down. Thus read with URVAROOKAMEVA, it means ‘I am bound down by deadly and overpowering diseases’.

MRITYORMOOKSHEYA: means to deliver us from death (both premature deaths in this Physical world and from the never-ending cycle of deaths due to re-birth) for the sake of Mokshya (Nirvana or final emancipation from re-birth).

MAAMRITAAT means ‘please give me some Amritam (life rejuvenating nectar). Read with the previous word, it means that we are praying for some ‘Amrit’ to get out of the death inflicting diseases as well as the cycle of re-birth.
